IUOE Local 12 entrance exam study guide
Start here if you are preparing for the IUOE Local 12 apprenticeship entrance exam. Use this guide to understand the subjects, choose a starting lesson, and work toward timed practice.
Start the guided courseWhat to study
The published format has 100 questions: 35 English, 20 math and 45 mechanical. Use the study guide to review all three areas, then spend extra practice time on the topics you miss.
Build a study routine
Keep each session focused on one skill. Understanding why an answer works is more useful than remembering one example.
- Try a short practice test to find your starting point.
- Read a lesson for a skill you missed and work through its examples.
- Answer fresh questions without looking at the explanation first.
- Use the full practice test when you are comfortable switching between subjects.
Check your test-day instructions
OETT’s entrance-testing page gives 90 minutes; its FAQ says one hour. Follow your applicant notice. The published rules allow calculators, prohibit phone calculators, and provide scratch paper. Confirm the instructions that apply to your appointment.
Lessons to start with
- Word Meaning — Use the sentence to work out a word
- Basic Math & Order of Operations — Know which calculation to do first
- Forces & Moving in a Circle — Pushes, pulls, and what happens when you let go
Common questions
Is this the official Local 12 exam?
No. The Union Project is an independent study tool. Its practice questions are original and are not official exam items.
What score is required to pass?
OETT lists a minimum of 70 out of 100. A practice score does not predict admission or when an applicant will be called.
