Synonyms: Similar Meanings
Choose the word with the closest meaning
What to know
- synonym: a word with a similar meaning
- how strong a word is
- how a word is used
Two words can be related without meaning the same thing.
The core rule
Choose the word closest in meaning and strength.
A synonym has the same or nearly the same meaning. For example, cautious means careful. Fearful adds fear, so it is not as close. Define the word simply, then check each choice. A related topic alone does not make an answer correct.
Worked examples
Example 1: easy
Durable is closest to long-lasting.
- Durable means able to last through use.
- Long-lasting matches. Fragile means easily broken; costly means expensive.
The right word keeps the same meaning: lasting a long time.
Example 2: medium
Cautious is closest to careful, not fearful.
- Cautious means careful about danger or mistakes.
- Careful fits. Fearful adds a feeling of fear that is not required.
Choose the closest meaning without adding a stronger feeling.
Example 3: hard
Meticulous is closest to painstaking because both imply close attention to detail.
- Meticulous means taking great care with details.
- Painstaking also means taking great care and effort. Slow alone does not.
Both words describe careful attention, not just speed.
Common mistakes
Any related word is a synonym.
Look for the same meaning. Hammer and nail are related, but they do not mean the same thing.
