Analogies: Matching Connections

Use the same connection for both word pairs

What to know

  • what a tool does
  • a part and the whole it belongs to
  • cause and result
  • order of the words

Two pairs can share a topic but have different connections.

The core rule

Turn the first pair into a short sentence. Use that same sentence for the second pair.

An analogy matches two connections. A thermometer measures temperature; a scale measures weight. Both use the pattern tool measures something. Keep the order the same: blade is part of saw matches bit is part of drill.

Worked examples

Example 1: easy

Thermometer measures temperature; scale measures weight.

  1. Say the connection: a thermometer measures temperature.
  2. Use the same pattern: a scale measures weight.

Both pairs name a tool followed by what it measures.

Example 2: medium

Blade is part of saw; bit is part of drill.

  1. A blade is part of a saw.
  2. A bit is part of a drill. Keep the part first and the whole second.

The same connection and word order must fit both pairs.

Example 3: hard

Friction causes heat; impact can cause deformation.

  1. Friction can cause heat.
  2. Impact can cause deformation, meaning a change in shape.

Both pairs name a cause followed by a result.

Common mistakes

Any two related words complete an analogy.

The second pair needs the same connection, in the same order, as the first.
